A host of legends swirl around ruby; in Burma, warriors used to insert rubies under the skin to make them invincible in battle, and in medieval Europe, rubies were thought to guarantee health, wealth, wisdom and success in love. These days, ruby remains one of the most sought after and best known gemstones. Ruby is corundum, which makes it the same family as sapphire, and it is a hard and durable stone.
