Tanzanite is a beautiful transparent gemstone that is found in just one area of Tanzania. A lovely, delicate shade of indigo violet, it offers the blue of a sapphire without the price-tag. It is also slightly plechroic - that is, it displays different colours and intensities of colour when viewed from different angles. In the case of the material I have, it is a lavender blue when viewed face on, more of a sapphire blue and deeper shade when viewed from the side. Common inclusions are tiny crystals, clouds of miniature particles, fine needles and larger rods of different coloured crystals. These stones are a little included, and like all tanzanite, heat treated to improve and intensify the colour.
